Not a lot of attempts at yesterday’s question, which was “What important scholarly book was written by Bilbo?” Either you all knew that the first answer was right or it was just too hard. The answer is “Translations from the Elvish.” It was a little tricky, because Bilbo was also working on a book about his adventures with the Dwarves, which he called “There, and Back Again,” but that wasn’t a scholarly work; they were his memoirs.

Speaking of Elves, let’s focus on them today: “What name was given to the Elves of Lothlorien and what did it mean in Sindarin?

  • OK, to prove I’m a total Geek (and that I just read 1/2 the chapter entitled TREEBEARD in the Two Towers) let me clarify something:

    Hilary:  Lorelindorenan or something like it is what the ELVES used to call Lorien or Lothlorien, before they shortened it.  Treebeard discusses this with Merry and Pippen after they asked him for his Entish name, which he states would take a LONG LONG TIME.
