Rumors and hints of indults

I know we’re all waiting on the edges of our seats for the results of the dicasterial meeting at the Vatican today that some people think will lead to a universal indult. I wouldn’t hold your breath or anything because it’s possible we won’t hear the results for days.

However, Shawn Tribe is hearing that Italian Vatican Radio is reporting that the Holy Father will promulgate a motu proprio “liberalizing the Mass of St. Pius X.” Take it for what it is. Frankly, I’d like to hear the official translation because “liberalizing” is vague.

  • VR reports in French have been covering a couple of aspects of the issue.

The French bishops, meeting at Lourdes, expressed views favoring communion but opposing a separate administrative structure for traditionalists.  In what may be a display of irrelevance, a working group of their conference is preparing a text for their next meeting in November.

VR reported this morning’s interdicasterial meeting, following on the previous one in February and the consistory discussions on the same topic in March, and indicated ongoing developments “week by week”.

The English feature program for the evening didn’t mention the story at all.

  • The French have to take the traditionalists into account.  Half the practicing Catholics in France are trads.  The SSPX is huge in France, Holland and Belgium.

BTW, like in the US but even hugely more so, the number of “practicing Catholics” of the N. O. stripe is grandly overestimated.  In the case of France, so much so that the official presentation is a joke in that regard.

Visit France, Holland or Belgium some time, go to Church sunday morning and you’ll get the real scoop.  The churches are museums, public agencies for tourism.

  • I guess Holy Thursday is a famous day for introducing all things liturgical.  As my barometer of what is going on I’ll watch the reaction of groups like the Jesuits, Commonwheel, the USCCB, Catholic Answers … I won’t expect full cranial revolutions with projectile green vomit … but maybe high levels of agitation.

“Visit France, Holland or Belgium some time, go to Church sunday morning and you’ll get the real scoop.  The churches are museums, public agencies for tourism.” But not the SSPX chapels hah, hah, hah, hah.
