There’s lots of talk in Rome suddenly that Pope Benedict is about to name new cardinals. In fact, the Italian news agency that broke the story says the consistory will happen on February 22. I’m not surprised.
I predicted this back in November based on simple logic. The College of Cardinals is depleted by age and is currently 9 members short of its normative level of 120 cardinal-electors, a shortage which will only increase in the next year as cardinals reach the age of 80. And in the recent past, consistories have taken place in the September-October time frame or in February, that is outside of either the Lent-Easter seasons or Advent-Christmas seasons.
Who will be named?

Y’know, Abp. Vingt-Trois (“twenty-three”) has succeeded the late Cdl. Sin as the prelate with the most amusing name.
I’m surprised Dan Brown didn’t work that in somehow.
Andre 23. Still sounds like a hip-hop artist to me.
With all proper shout-outs to our Lord and Savior, of course! ;^)
Vingt-Trois is interesting, especially since we know the answer to life, the universe and everything is “42”.
Jan. 6 is shaping up to be a big day in the VA.
Anyone got odds on Jose Gomez of San Antonio?
Woohoo. Replace McCarrick. I’m tired of his sorry attitude.
I thought I heard months ago that the Holy Father had asked McCarrick to stick around for another year or so.
Oh I heard that he just didn’t replace him. I didn’t get out of what I heard that he asked him to “stick around.”
