Have you seen the following little ditty in your email inbox?

Headlines from the year 1981:

1. Prince Charles got married.
2. Liverpool crowned soccer Champions of Europe.
3. Australia lost the Ashes tournament.
4. Pope died.

1. Prince Charles got married.
2. Liverpool crowned soccer Champions of Europe.
3. Australia lost the Ashes tournament.
4. Pope died.

  • It hasn’t arrived in mine.

Pope Michael?  Hey, any pope in a pinch.  The email is really about sports anyway, isn’t it? The other two items are merely serving as bookends.

Then again, maybe it’s just supposed to get a rise out of the reader, or perhaps a wry chuckle, as in “The more things change…”

  • Well the Pope almost died.

JP II was shot by Agca on May 13, 1981.

Close but no cigar, as they say.
