The Boston Globe has posted the following question on its discussion boards:

The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has offered $7.5 million to about 100 alleged victims of clergy sexual abuse, lawyers in the cases said yesterday. This settlement will provide alleged abuse victims with a median of $75,000 each, compared with a historic 2003 settlement which provided 554 alleged victims with a median of $155,000 each. What do you think of the church’s offer?

You can imagine the discussion that has ensued. The Catholics who are defending the Church there and providing a dose of truth and perspective are feeling beleaguered and would like some reinforcements. If that’s your cup of tea, feel free to jump in.

If this is anything like what happened here in St Louis on the Post-Disgrace’s comment board about the St. Stanislaus excommunation declaration by Archbishop Burke, I can only imagine that those who are defending the Church are probably outnumbered by a factor of about 10-20 to 1.  And of course, every other anti-Catholic topic under the sun may be brought up as well….Perhaps, though, in this case, it might be different…

  • Bigots will be bigots and, just as prayers for those in hell will only make the sufferings worse and cause louder blasphemes to pour forth, defense of the truth here will only result in inflaming the hatred to a greater degree.
