Amazing Grace: The Movie

I just saw the trailer for the new movie “Amazing Grace”, the story of both the hymn and William Wilberforce, the antislavery pioneer and Member of Parliament who led the epic and world-changing battle to get the British Empire to outlaw the slave trade in the 18th century. It looks very good. Is there another song that is as moving as “Amazing Grace,” especially when played on a company of bagpipes? It’s almost as if the pipes were made for that song.

Wilberforce is played by Ioan Gruffudd, who you may remember from “Fantastic Four” or “Blackhawk Down”, although I remember him best from “Horatio Hornblower” TV series. Others in the cast include Albert Finney and Youssou N’Dour.

The producers include Terrence Malik, about whom Jim Caviezel told a very interesting story related to his acting and faith at the Boston Catholic Men’s Conference two years ago. Another producer is Patricia Heaton, the pro-life actress who used to be on the sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

The movie opens next Friday.
