On fasting and pregnancy

Contemplating my empty stomach while fasting on Ash Wednesday, I just said to Melanie, “You’re lucky that you’re pregnant. You don’t have to fast.”

She replied, “Can I slap you now?”

Yesterday, she was babysitting my nieces—Kateri, 5, and Chiara, 3,—and nephew, Joshua, 1, while my sister ran some errands. Evy left a snack for the kids with strict instructions that even if they asked for more food, they didn’t need it.

Sure enough, Kateri asked for more to eat and Melanie had to refuse. She replied, “But you keep eating.” How do you explain to a five-year-old that pregnant women need to eat many small meals?

In any case, Uncle D came to the rescue with hot chocolate made in his nifty hot chocolate machine.

  • I’ve already made the midnight run, but not for food… for antacids and Tylenol! Motherhood is a joy, but the sin of Adam and Eve makes it a cross as well.

Seriously, I have the utmost respect for the suffering women endure in pregnancy.

  • It is wonderful that Melanie can now eat without quickly loosing it all.  Keep on eating healthy Melanie!!!!!!!!  You both need it.  Of course we know that Dom never feeds you.

  • I hope it will reassure you that I resisted the temptation to have fish and chips for dinner and instead had a grilled chicken ceasar salad. smile

And I’d like to state for the record that Dom is a fabulous cook and makes dinner far more often than I do. It was a huge sacrifice on his part not to cook for the several months that the smell of cooking food made me sick.
