Old-fashioned ice cream man

Old-fashioned ice cream man

Inspired by Suzanne Temple’s reflection on the ice cream truck tradition, I was just thinking that if I were the owner of an ice cream stand that sells homemade ice cream (like, for example, the place across the street from us here in Peabody, called Treadwell’s), I would try to compete.

I would buy my own truck and instead of novelty, pre-packaged ice creams I would pack up big tubs of homemade ice cream and cones and drive around the neighborhoods selling the real thing at the same prices I sell my regular product and making a killing. After all, given the choice wouldn’t anyone choose real ice cream over too small, stale novelties?

But I’m not an ice cream store owner. Maybe if I talk to the guy who owns Treadwell’s…
