My child the dog

My child the dog

One thing Melanie and I both agree on is that people who refer to their pets as their “children” (especially those without children of their own) creep us out. Apparently it also creeps out Genevieve Kineke and Cathy Seipp. The latter relates an encounter in a dog park with a woman and her “boys.”

What does it say about our society that children and animals are put on the same moral level and that there is as much compunction about killing unborn children as there is to euthanizing an aged dog.

  • Yes, it is creepy.  And very confused.  And ultimately sad when kitty kicks the bucket like all kitties do.  I really love animals—always have.  But they’re animals.

It can be cruel to personify an animal.  Puppies are not meant to learn elaborate table manners etc.  It sort of warps them.  Dogs & cats can get neurotic if their owners are, did you know that?

When i was a kid, I used to take in mistreated animals and saw some of these cases.  They are very hard to place in good homes if they have awful weird habits.

  • I’ve often considered walking around in shopping centers, parks and other areas where lots of people are and advertise free dog and cat abortions at any stage of the pregnancy.
I would not of course actually do it (even aborting an animal creeps me out a little)
but it would certainly be intersting to see the reaction of people.
After they finished screaming at me I’d give them a pro-life brochure.
There is no question in my mind that aborting an animal is more repulsive to some of these people than say the abortion of their grandchild or some other soul.

  • Yowsa, Abe, What an excellent idea!  Might even make the news.  Don’t try it alone, tho, as you are most surely going to be assaulted by at least one nut.  A pro life org. might try it , tho.

  • In Rome people dress their little dogs up and even take them to Church, and other public places.  This is not suprising though because many people think of Children as things to be had not as real people.

  • I know a few childless people (my sister, for one) for whom their pets “stand in” for the children they never had. It’s actually a little pathetic. I have never heard of “pet abortions”, how weird.

Having said that…I love “my boys”, two poodles, one a rescued dog. They have their names and my phone number on special doggy St Francis medals (so sue me…). But…they’re dogs, just dogs.

  • I have always been fond of animals, but never think of them as ‘people’. They’re animals – meant by God for our use and enjoyment. While we shouldn’t abuse them, neither should we attribute human qualities to them. They’re animals, not people – as anyone who has been around farming for any length of time can attest.

We have three dogs and a cat. Two were purchased (not AKC-certified however – mutts, in short). One was adopted and one adopted us – the cat, of course…

It bugs me when I see more concern for animals by the PETA-like sorts and little concern about unborn babies being killed. Get a sense of proportion, people! There is no doggie-heaven – but there is a people-heaven. And that’s what all of us want to reach…

  • Looking at the aisles in the grocery stores, canned/bagged animal food takes up one whole, long aisle, top to bottom.  Next aisle takes up the snacks and toys for the animals.  Now walk over to the baby food aisle.  The only thing that might have influenced the greatly reduced size of the baby food aisle is the possibility that women are making their own healthy baby food these days and are nursing more and longer.  But, I doooooon’t think so.
