Inconsistencies

Tim Graham of NewsBusters tracks Boston Globe columnist Ellen Goodman’s flip-flopping on teen sex, coming down in various places depending on who the target is: Clinton, the Catholic Church, Mark Foley, abstinence educators, Rick Santorum. This past February, in fact, she was arguing that underage teens having sex is a good thing and that requiring abortion clinics to report violations of the statutory rape law is a problem. Considering that a very high incidence of teen abortion and contraceptive use is because the girls are having sex with men over 18, the fact that Goodman is decrying Foley’s actions is somewhat hypocritical.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not defending Foley’s actions. He and I are just pointing out Goodman’s inconsistencies.

  • Alice, it’s also interesting to note that former Boston city councilor David Scondras, who is openly gay and supposedly an AIDS activist, was arrested yesterday for soliciting sex from what he thought was a 15-year-old boy. The news reports said he was specifically seeking to have unprotected sex.
