Your tax dollars at work

I was poking around the web site of Salem State College tonight and discovered that it actually offers majors in Sport, Fitness, and Leisure Studies. Leisure studies? What exactly is leisure studies?

Let’s take a look at some of the majors offered in the SFL department. Anyone for Aquatic Management? That’s right, you can earn a four-year bachelor’s degree in running a pool. Among the required courses are Standard First Aid & CPR and Basic Swim & Water Safety. I’m sorry, but I earned merit badges in those. You can learn them in an afternoon at summer camp. But these are 200-level courses in a four-year degree program.

  • Dom,

My wife’s sister majored in Recreational and Leisure studies.  She worked briefly at a hotel pool handing out towels where she met a rich guy who she ended up marrying. Now she no longer works and has taken up various feminist causes revolving around salary equity. I guess it paid off for her.

  • Our neighbor’s son is majoring in auto mechanics at Southern Illinois “University.”  The father was quick to explain that when graduated, he would be equipped to run an auto agency.  Your tax dollars at work—training future Leftists (which is what this kid and his friends are now).
