Did I mention that I had seen M. Night Shyamalan’s movie “The Village”? Melanie and I saw it the day before I moved so I think I forgot to write my impressions of it in all the hubbub. I’m a fan of Shyamalan so I liked the movie. It was better than “Unbreakable,” but perhaps not as good as “Signs” or “Sixth Sense.” Of course, it has the trademark Shyamalan twists and turns, the amazing visual appeal, the use of the camera and music almost like members of the cast, and so on. I liked “The Village” as well and like you, I figured it out fairly early, but that did not detract from the movie, at least for me.

Make sure you see M. Night S’s first movie “Wide Awake” which is quite good and deals with religious beliefs straight away. I think it’s on ‘starz’ this month if you have that and I know I’ve rented it so it’s around although not well known. Great movie for kids to watch if you are looking for a well done ‘Catholic’ movie.
When I saw the film, I didn’t see the twists coming, although I usually do, but I had a different take. The whole Village was based on, and could only operate because of a lie – there whole way of life depended on it. How much of our culture is lie dependent? “It’s ok to do what makes you feel good.” “The truth is your truth.” etc. In this sense, this film is a typical post-mod offering with a nice deconstruction at the end.
