Reagan on politics and faith

While the nations mourns Ronald Reagan this week, it is good to reflect on some of his best speeches. Another of his great speeches was his remarks at an ecumenical prayer breakfast in Dallas in August 1984. I can’t imagine any politician giving this speech today, even George W. Bush because they would be roundly slammed for bringing religion into politics. Reagan even goes back to defend the idea of prayer in schools, something which has long been ceded to the anti-religion crowd. But Reagan had insights that apply even today to the controversy over Catholic politicians who dissent from the Church’s teachings.
