There’s a bit of an uproar over some questionable grants by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (the one extra-collection at my parish that I still refuse to give anything for). The CCHD has often been charged with giving money to groups whose missions are at cross-purposes to the Church’s teachings.
In this case, the CCHD has given $30,000 to a group in Cleveland called the East Side Organizing Project (ESOP). I do have just two problems with the information at the link above. First, the grant is from CCHD, not the Diocese of Cleveland. CCHD is an agency of the US bishops’ conference, and the diocese does not directly control where the group’s money goes. It does not necessarily follow that the $30,000 CCHD gave to ESOP could have gone to Cleveland diocese schools that have shut down, and even if it did, it wouldn’t have made a difference to those schools.
I’m not sure what the consequences would be to a bishop who refused to have CHD collection or did a full disclosure that CHD grantees are required not have a gospel-sharing mission and are not required to conform to Catholic moral teaching and in fact can and do oppose Catholic moral teaching in the case of many grantees. So in some sense the Cleveland diocese is cooperating with the CHD to pass the money onto ESOP.
Some of there leftist groups approach CHD with both a sense of contempt for the Church and a sense of entitlement to the money, while other worthy groups not part of the cozy CHD club cannot be funded.
