Mmmmm, jam…

Mmmmm, jam…

In my quest to become a better cook and more well-rounded person (unfortunately, in more ways than one), I have decided to do some canning and preserving this year. My mom picked up some Mason jars at the discount store for me the other say, so I said what the heck. I went to the store and picked up some sugar, some fruit pectin, and four pints of blueberries.

It was easier than I thought it would be. It does take an awful lot of sugar to make 3 pints of blueberry jam (4 cups!), but I think the results will be worth it. I’m looking forward to trying it on some biscuits. Word of caution, though: Boiling blueberries are an effective substitute for hot magma. When a splash of it lands on your arm, you better have a nice towel handy to get it off or it will burn straight through to the bone. Trust me, I have learned this.

Now I’m all read to start canning and preserving other stuff. Tomatoes may be next! Hey, if the big one goes up and we all have to live off the land, I may be able to survive after all.

Oh, and ladies: I’m a single guy who can fix a fence and dig post holes and put up preserves and make a great gourmet meal. Better snap me up while you can!
