Is Iraq better off without Saddam?

Sadly, some people would say No.

The Pope’s envoy in Baghdad gave his assessment of the situation in Iraq on the one-year anniversary of the war. I wonder sometimes where these guys are coming from. First, he repeats the old conspiracy claim that the war was pre-planned before 9/11. No, the war wasn’t but, regime change in Iraq has been official policy since the Clinton administration. And don’t forget that the war that began last year was only the continuation of the war that Saddam began back in 1990. He broke the terms of the ceasefire agreement and triggered the consequences.

  • I wouldn’t be surprised if much of the archbishop’s assessment is colored by the fact that the new constitution in Iraq may treat Christians [and Chaldean Catholics in particular] differently than Saddam’s regime did, which is to say that Saddam gave some deference to Christians that Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds may not.  Hence, there is much “wait and see” in his diplomatese.
