Greeley says OK to vote for Kerry

I was afraid this would happen. The coda on Cardinal Ratzinger’s letter to Cardinal McCarrick about pro-abortion politicians receiving Communion talked about proportional reasons for voting for such a candidate. Fr. Andrew Greeley takes that to mean that Catholics can vote for any pro-abortion candidate they want, as long as they themselves are not pro-abortion. He’s wrong and misunderstands the cardinal. Whether intentionally or not, I can’t say.

Meanwhile, Bishop Robert Carlson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, interprets Ratzinger correctly.

“If one had a properly formed conscience admitting the grave evil of abortion and euthanasia, as the Church teaches, and does not share a candidate’s stand in favor of abortion and euthanasia, but votes for the candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation which can be permitted, Cardinal Ratzinger states, if proportionate reasons are present, e.g., the candidate would limit abortions.”

  • Greeley is a democratic and prochoice….period….the last time I saw this “major theologian” he was berrating the Passion film and proved to anyone who had seen it (3times for me) that he clearly hadn’t….he is a “weak” priest to quote another piece in CL today….

  • Bishop Carlson is a great one for being orthodox.  He lays out the truth as it should be.  I can’t agree with him more.

Bandit, as he is affectionately known by some in the Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneaoplis has been taking stands his entire episcopacy.  Heck, he has to, he has Senator Daschle as a member of his flock.

Kudos to Bishop Carlson…..Bandit, keep fighting the good fight.

  • Yeah, but what does Greeley know about this?  The only thing he owns up to knowing, he won’t produce in public, and I don’t think he knows that either.  He’s guessing.
