A landmark for St. Albert’s (and not the one you think)

A landmark for St. Albert’s (and not the one you think)

As the occupation of the former St. Albert’s parish languishes on past 100 days, all the liberal media are regaling us with the importance of the protest to the future of the Church. To hear them tell it, it is the beginning of a revolution that will sweep the Church and usher in a new progressive era. I’m afraid they’re going to be sorely disappointed.

(By the way, read this entry to the end for the real kicker that’s emblematic of the whole mess and the foul-ups both in the former parish and the archdiocese.)

But all these people in church every day and night, it must be doing wonders for their prayer life, right? I mean, isn’t that what this is about, their faith, not the community activities?

Eileen Rowan, 62, sits in a pew for three hours after work each Friday, listening to Rod Stewart CDs and reading romance novels. John Mullin, 58, waits in his wheelchair in the foyer, clutching a chain to attach himself to the door in case church officials try to seize the building.

Real edifying. From what I’ve read, this is fairly representative of daily life in the church. Is this what they’re trying to save this church for?

  • Better get the buyer to agree not to start a new “Catholik World News” or “Domenic Bettinelli’s Blog” – and make sure the buyer is not Frances Kissling!!!!!

    MS

  • Sorry, but before I offer advice I need some details (:>)……why does the guy want your domain name?

  • He hasn’t said yet, but my guess is that he’s German. When I was registering my domain I came to the conclusion that the word “bett” has something to do with beds or bedding in German. (Not speaking German, I can’t say for sure.)

A key part of any agreement would be that they wouldn’t use the domain for anything that would reflect badly on me or my website.

  • <i>Sorry, but before I offer advice I need some details/i>

As opposed to me. Before I offer advice I need but one question: how much? wink

If you’re worried about your readers, Domenico (:-) then please don’t. I don’t even have you under my “favorite places.” I took a text clipping of your URL years ago, stationed it on my desktop and double-click it every day. No sweat.

For those o’ you who think I’m talking in tongues…I use a Mac wink

  • No condolences necessary. Two words: No spyware. Two more: No adware.

Anyway, the URL for this blog wouldn’t change because it’s running at bettnet.dyndns.org anyway, which is a dymanic domain name service. In short, it points at my cable modem connection and thus my dedicated web server running in my house.

  • No, Dom; do not sell your domain name.  It has already taken on the status of a brand.  More people know how to type bettnet.com than know how to spell Bettinelli (or Domenico, for that matter.)

  • And yes, “Bett” is “bed” in German.  There is a bettnet.de site belonging to some travel company.  Maybe you can sell them some ad space on your site?

  • To be fair, your cavil at the number of parishioners is misplaced.  Most parishes have many more registered parishioners than parishioners attending Mass.

  • I didn’t cavil at the number of parishioners. I was disputing their claim that they even have 1,300 parishioners when the census said 1,222 and their claim that all 1,300 of them are supporting the protest and none of them were welcomed into other parishes. It’s just not true.

  • Dom—I hate to disagree, but the “parishioners” vs. “attendees” question raised by RC is a valid one.  I agree with you on the pertinent point:  that even if there WERE 1222 people attending Mass in October 2004 at St. Albert’s, the nonsensical statement that “many” of them had been edified by the takeover/sit-in is totally out of bounds.  There’s no way that the reporter interviewed a significant number of those 1,222 people; the word “many” is newspaper code these days for “the ones I talked to who are on my side of the story.”

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Ronny Coyne is the %&^%(& who’s supplying hosts to the priestesses.

  • A Church should a place consecrated to the worship of God alone.  These protesters have made it profane.  It is God’s house, not ours.

If they want a community center, then let it be done by purchasing one.

Rather than a show of force, a counter-demonstration might be more effective.

  • If you go to betnet.com (note the one “t”), you’ll see you’re not far off.

Also, just for fun, try Bettinelli.com . They’re nice people, too.

I just wish bett.com was available, but it’s been the same placeholder page in German (and I can’t tell what it says) for the past eight or more years!

  • Dom—sorry; not trying to obfuscate.  Total parishioners = total number of people registered; attendees = small percentage of above who actually go to Mass and were physically counted.  There are, most likely, about 5,000 “registered” parishioners of St. Albert (if, like most other places, only 25% of registered parishioners attend Mass).  What RC and I were saying is that it appeared when you said, “There aren’t 1300 parishioners . . .” you doubted that there were that many people registered at that parish.  There undoubtedly ARE that many registered.

However, as you apparently MEANT, there probably aren’t even that many who attend Mass there weekly, and on top of that, most likely a very small percentage of them are supporting this protest with their bodies and wallets.

The thing that annoyed me was the reference to not “feeling” welcomed at other parishes.  I know for a FACT that other local parishes have reached out to former parishioners of St. Albert’s, and it is a FACT that a large number of them are happily ensconced in other parish families—some even at our place!

  • Kelly, you’re funny!
Dom, contact the guy and see if he’s still interested.
If he is, let the price negotiations begin (if he wants the site name for a big business, you can get more $ for it).
Hail to Mary on her feast day.

  • Dom,
tell me that you are submitting your clarity to at least the Letters to the Editors of the Herald and GLobe? Is anyone telling the greater Boston area what that the press doesn’t know Church teaching (mounds of evidence for that) and that neither do these so called protesters?

Aw, come on, Pat: wouldn’t it be more fun to get the orthodox Catholics together and occupy the place ourselves?  There must be at least a couple hundred of us in the diocese.  grin

  • Yes, himself was about to begin a new line of angst-spewing about the media, decided against it and forgot to hit backspace.  Comes from having too many opinions!

  • Dom,

Do you spend every waking hour of every waking day praying? You can’t honestly expect people sitting in a Church for 8 hours to just sit there praying in silence.

I have no problem if you criticize the vigils (though you seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on one parish, possibly a vendetta against Fr. Coyne). But, you have no right to question the strength of other people’s faiths whom you don’t know.

I disagree with some of the things that you say, but I never question your faith and I don’t think that you have the right to do so to other people.

Let the feeding frenzy begin. . .

Isn’t this what it is all about? James in his epistle makes the pertinant point that the devils also believe and tremble. I have every right to question people’s faith when they reject the teachings of Christ’s Church. It is time we stopped being mealy mouthed on the agree to disagree thing. Just because one claims to have faith does not mean that faith is licit. The faith of the Arians was no doubt strong but they were still heretics. One of the reasons we are in this mess is because of the cult of niceness, the refusal to speak up for the truth. The early Church made it clear that right belief = the faith. So I will say it here – I do doubt your faith. By your actions you have declared yourselves outside the Church and thus outside salvation as Augustine declares. To deny the Church is to deny Christ. I will pray for all involved that they may find true faith in Christ but I will not validate your beliefs as equivalent to the faith of the Church. If I am wrong I pray that My Lord will forgive my error and show me so. but till then I can only take my stand with those who gave their lives rather than abandon one iota of their faith in the Church as Christ’s creation and bride.

Detachment, Dom.  Detachment.  Take the advice from one (i.e., me) who needs the advice.
