A guilty plea

A guilty plea

A former Boston priest has pled guilty to raping a boy over a span of five years back in the 80s. Robert Gale changed his plea right before the trial was to start. He has not been laicized yet, but his faculties have been removed. The guilty plea means the laicization process will proceed apace.

In a report on the sexual abuse crisis within the Boston Archdiocese issued in July 2003, state Attorney General Thomas Reilly said allegations that Gale was sexually abusing children in the 1970s and early 1980s were brought to senior archdiocese managers in 1979, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1992 and 1994.

That helps me recall the old outrage of 2002. It also makes me wonder if we’re truly beyond that yet. My fear is that despite all the assurances and policies created and soothing words, there is no evidence in a change of thinking at the top.
