Papal liturgies are the gold standard

The Pope told an audience today that papal liturgies must set the standard for the world.

The importance of pontifical liturgy has become more pronounced, the Pope said. He noted that “today, with television and radio, many people, from all parts of the world, follow the liturgy.” Those who follow the papal ceremonies are likely to use them as a yardstick against which liturgy should be measured, the Pope said. Thus the liturgy becomes a way in which the Pope teaches the Catholic faithful, giving them a proper idea of what they should expect.

Does this mean that Archbishop Piero Marini’s days as head of the papal liturgy office are numbered? After all, he was responsible for some of the worst excesses of papal liturgies under John Paul II. If Marini’s not leaving, it might mean that things are changing nonetheless.

  • The TLM and the “Reform of the Reform” have always argued ad infinitem.  Until the faithfull realize that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is a “rerepresentation of the Cross”, they will then know which Mass does a better job of doing this rerepresenation.  It is not a matter of what Mass is Valid, they both are.  It is not a matter of which one is approved.  They both are.  It is a matter of which Mass fully represents the Faith and the doctrines on the Mass in it’s totallity, in the most clearest way possible.

  • If “Those who follow the papal ceremonies are likely to use them as a yardstick against which the liturgy should be measured…” does that mean
I can tell my non-Catholic friends that it is alright to receive communion because the Pope distributes communion to non-Catholics on TV?

  • Bibiana,

Exactly how do you know that Pope Benedict has knowingly distributed Communion to non-Catholics on TV?

Further, let’s imagine for a moment that he did in fact distribute Communion, knowingly, to non-Catholics: How would the Pope’s failure to observe the liturgical law of the Church make it ‘alright’ for you or anyone else to do the same?

Would you assert that if Pope Benedict committed any sin that it was in fact the establishment of a new teaching eliminating that act as a sin? Popes are not impeccable, not even the most saintly ones.

  • And do the first commentator, this might be a nitpick, but the incident you are referring to did not occur during a Papal liturgy.  It was carried out during the inter-regnum by the man would go on to be elected Pope.

  • The screeching is already at full throat on this item over at AmyW’s blog—as well as its corollary blog entry re the USBishops’ discussion of the new/revised translations.

B-16 is certainly pulling as hard as he can on the reins.  This is not the first instance of ‘directing’ the horses:  observe the funeral rites for JPII, B-16’s coronation Mass, B-16’s deliberate “skipping” of the secular Christmas concert at the Vatican, etc.

He’s making it VERY difficult to ignore, but not to worry—the LitWonkPoofter crowd will manage.

  • Liturgy Wonk Poofter

    (n) 1) an individual with a strong ‘non-serviam’ gene thread, and a corresponding Poofter disorder, usually acting-out by demonstrating utter disregard for Liturgical Authority and Liturgical Tradition. Also found in the Notions Department at Marshall Field’s, shopping. 2) an individual who is closely associated with #1) above although not, strictly speaking, a ‘poofter,’ e.g., strident feminazi Liturgy Committee (or Commission) members who demonstrate similar anti-nomian tendencies, particularly with regard the Liturgy. Can be found at Marshall Fields, but more often on the sidelines of soccer fields or active with the League of Wimmin Voters/AAUW, et. sim.
