By now everbody’s probably commented on or read about Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput’s column on anti-Catholicism in Washington, especially with regard to judicial nominees. I just want to add that it’s great to see a bishop stand tall in American public life for Catholic principles.
The sad thing is that it’s so unusual for a bishop to take such a bold stand that it attracts national news coverage and we have to cheer. I’d rather be able to nod emphatically at the recognition of one bishop among many who shepherd the flock so boldly that it becomes almost routine. But that isn’t going to happen with this present generation of bishops. Lord, send us more bishops like your son, Charles Chaput, and encourage your present bishops to be more like him.
