What would Jesus drive?

Jacob Sullum discusses the latest nutty left-wing Christian agenda item: that driving big vehicles is a sin. See, a coalition of wacky Christian groups says that Jesus would never drive uneconomical and environmentally unfriendly trucks. I think they’ve confused the fact that Jesus has long hair and a beard with him being a hippy.

The fact is that SUVs can carry large families and they’re safer for children by being bigger. As Sullum says, people don’t buy expensive vehicles for frivolous reasons, unless they happen to be multi-millionaires. He also notes that experts have determined that 5 to 10 percent of all cars are responsible for half of all tailpipe emissions and these cars tend to be older, poorly maintained cars. If that’s true, then it’s not SUV-driving suburbanites, but all those Deadheads and Berkley liberals in their VW microbuses and broken-down Datsuns causing pollution. In other words, it’s the people in this lefty anti-SUV coalition that are the real problem.
