The Vatican released a statement from the official spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, today in reaction to President Bush’s speech last night:
“Whoever decides that all peaceful means that international law has put at our disposition have been exhausted assumes a serious responsibility before God, his conscience and history.”
I think everyone has acknowledged that from the beginning, most of all George W. Bush. I don’t think the president has taken this course and this action lightly and without much soul-searching.
Also notice that it is not a condemnation, but a declaration. Big difference.
