Update on Susan Torres

[I started this blog entry before I found out my brother got sick, so I’m just finishing it now.]

There’s now a web site for Susan Torres, the 26-year-old mother of a 2-year-old and an unborn child who currently has no discernable higher brain activity and whose family is hoping she’ll survive until her child is old to be delivered.

There have been several newspaper stories as well. The Washington Times emphasizes the husband’s predicament, and I can certainly identify with his attitude at the end.

“Then I’d be nursing a premature child and a 2-year-old son alone,” says Mr. Torres, 26.

The situation is depressing, Mr. Torres says.

“I’ve had bad news for a while,” he says. “And I just get tired. All this stuff about closure and acceptance is crap. It’s just a choice you make to put one foot in front of the other.”

My brother Bernie suffered some of that when his wife Kathy died at age 36 back in 1992, leaving him with a 2-year-old daughter to care for. All the psychological stuff is one thing, but the reality is that life is what hits you in the face and you have to live it. You have to swim because sinking isn’t an option when your babies are depending on you.
