The Vatican’s budget

The standard media template about today’s report on the Vatican’s finances is that the Vatican has a deficit for the the third year in a row, that actual donations are up, and then they try to connect it to the Portland Archdiocese’s bankruptcy filing and the Boston Archdiocese’s closing of parishes. If you want a more accurate, unbiased story read our report at Catholic World News and if you’re a subscriber, our analysis.

The short form is that while donations to the Vatican from around the world rose last year, the continuing poor economy of last year contributed to the deficit, along with increased expenses for diplomatic offices around the world.
