The US bishops’ continuing responsibility

From the Boston Globe‘s coverage of Keating’s resignation:

The bishops had hoped that, for the first time since the fall of 2001, they would be able to gather for a session that was not dominated by clergy sexual abuse; instead they head for St. Louis with the attention of the news media now focused on the concerns raised by Keating.

Aside from the fact that the article assumes all the bishops speak with one voice (how do they know that’s what the bishop hoped for?), what planet are the bishops who hoped for that on? The Scandal isn’t over or certainly at least their responsibility for dealing with it.
