Tax could close Catholic schools?

The city of Pittsburgh is proposing a 0.5 percent payroll tax to close the city’s budget deficit. Great idea. Good way to drive businesses out of your city.

The city’s Roman Catholic diocese is telling parents it could be forced to close its schools if a local payroll tax is approved.

In a letter sent home with students, education officials for the diocese said Mayor Tom Murphy’s proposed 0.5 percent tax on employers’ payrolls could “severely affect” Catholic schools’ ability to remain open.
