Sleight of hand

Once again, the Boston Globe provides a platform for Voice of the Faithful to advance its agenda. VOTF president James Post is giving advice to Bishop O’Malley to fix everything. The op-ed is amazing for its underhandedness or naivete.

For one thing, Cardinal Law did not define the laity as the problem as Post says. What the cardinal saw as a problem was VOTF’s attempt to use the Scandal as a means to advance an agenda at odds with the teachings of the Church.

While the spotlight rightly shines on how more than 500 lawsuits brought by victims of alleged clergy sexual abuse will be resolved, O’Malley, as peacemaker, must recognize the root causes that produced this crisis. The forthcoming attorney general’s report is a place to start.

The root cause is not just institutional, it’s spiritual. That is the main problem with how VOTF sees the Church. Everything I see from the group, and especially Post, looks at the Church as a primarily a human organization and not a divine, spiritual entity.
