Postponement

Postponement

As RC pointed out in a comment below, the meeting today between Archbishop Sean O’Malley and plaintiff-victims for settlement negotiations has been postponed. It appears one of the lawyers, Mitchell Garabedian, couldn’t keep from grandstanding and alerted the media as to the location and times of the meetings and that meant there would be a stampede of media at the location. So the other lawyers, not the archdiocese, decided they didn’t want that kind of attention.

Part of the problem, it seems, is a split between the victims. Lawyer Roderick MacLeish said some victims opposed to the settlement with the archdiocese were expected to show up. He said one of his client-victims had actually been spit upon by a “victims’ advocate” who accused him of “selling out.” Very nice. Victimize the victim again.

Of course, it is a bit hypocritical for MacLeish to criticize Garabedian for creating a media circus. He is, after all, the one who began trying his case in the press and the court of public opinion by releasing documents related to the case in huge stage productions last year.
