Here’s a surprise. Pro-abortion Catholic politicians are saying that they will not voluntarily abstain from the Eucharist as ordered by the US bishops. Did anyone seriously think that these politicians would voluntarioly refrain? That’s what’s so maddening about the debate on this issue and the bishops’ statements. Everyone knows that the statement about voluntary compliance as issued by the bishops’ conference was dead on arrival, presumably including the bishops. Yet, we’re all supposed to drink the Kool-Aid and pretend that their statement will have some effect.
These politicians are not just misinformed. Every single one of them already well knows what the Church teaches on abortion. Wagging a finger at them and patting them on the head is not going to change their minds. It’s insulting to everyone for the bishops to pretend otherwise.
