Speaking of church closings, leave it to the media to make dotting all the i’s look nefarious. The Boston Herald‘s cover headline on Sunday was “Church Closings: No Appeal” and the story said that there will be no hope of appeal any closings because Archbishop O’Malley has taken “steps to ensure that the process is appeal-proof.”
What has really happened is that O’Malley has gone to great lengths to ensure that the process of church closings meets all the requirements of canon law. He’s not seeking to do an end-run around the rights of Catholics whose parishes are going to close, like the article and headline imply.
