Moving on

The Archdiocese of Boston announced yesterday that 80 percent of plaintiffs have accepted the settlement deal. Eighty percent of the 552 eligible people have agreed to be part of the $85 million settlement, which automatically puts it into effect. It means that the lawsuits will soon be behind us.

But is the Scandal now over? In one way, I hope not, because we still haven’t dealt with the root causes of the problem. Bishops ignored warnings and moved predators from parish to parish. Men unwilling to live and teach according to the word of God were allowed to enter into the priesthood and to continue on, even after they were discovered. Dissent and heresy continue unabated in the Church among both lay people and the ordained.

There’s a lot that needs to be done. I just hope that people don’t wipe their hands and say, “I’m glad that’s over. Back to my old complacency.”
