There was a time when Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles berated Cardinal Law for cover ups and failing to cooperate with authorities. Just before the US cardinals went to the Vatican for their summit last April, Mahony even said that were he in Law’s shoes, he would resign. When the shoe fits, wear it. Now Cardinal Mahony, who once said he would turn over all documents related to clergy sex abuse, is saying that the 1st Amendment says he doesn’t have to. He once promised to cooperate with investigators, but evidently not anymore, especially now that California lifted the statute of limitations on filing lawsuits.
I guess what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander.
