The way some Boston parishes are reacting to the closings, you begin to understand why this is happening. Take, for instance, St. Bernard’s Parish in Newton. This article notes that it is the city’s third-largest parish. That right there tells you something. Then it says that at a meeting of parishioners last week, a member of the First Unitarian Society showed up:

“The people in our church and community support you 100 percent,” said Jennifer Wells, who added that local Unitarians are petitioning Archbishop Sean O’Malley to change his mind.
