I saw in the newspaper today (I didn’t see it online) that five people were killed at an Afghan wedding when one of the guests fired a rifle-propelled grenade into the air. In some Third World countries where weapons are abundant, it’s become a custom to fire the weapons off into the air in celebration of weddings, holidays, and so on. Even with the rifles, people are always getting hurt because they don’t understand the law of gravity (“What goes up, must come down”). This is just one step of stupidity further.
Some bozo fired his rifle into the air, either forgetting or knowing that there is a grenade on it. The grenade went up and came down and lay on the ground. As the local military commander put it, “A military officer attending the wedding approached the grenade to see why it hadn’t gone off. When he touched it, it exploded.” It would be funny if it weren’t so tragic that five people died.
