Pope John Paul has called for Catholics to fast on Ash Wednesday (next week!) for a peaceful resolution to the Iraq crisis. I support that idea wholeheartedly and will, of course, join in. That may surprise some readers who think that I am “pro-war.”
I am not “pro-war.” I think war is, as the Pope put it, a “defeat for humanity” and should be avoided as much as possible. But I also recognize that there can come a point in which the use of force by one country against another becomes justified and necessary. I pray we don’t come to that—and I believe a miracle is possible to prevent it—but I also believe we should prepare for war if it comes to that, as a last resort.
