The Massachusetts Catholic Conference has sent a mailing to Catholics in the state about how politicians voted on gay marriage and the Boston Globe wrings its hands about the Church meddling in political affairs; her “attempts ... to influence the Legislature on gay marriage.”
Of course, there would not be the same hand-wringing over, say, the Unitarians advocating for gay marriage. The only time they worry about separation of church and state is when it’s traditional morality and faith trying to make itself heard. I never see Americans United for Separation of Church and State threatening the tax exempt status of churches that host liberal Democrats for campaign appearances or call on their congregations to vote liberal.
