The well-known liberal Jesuit magazine America is dismayed that Andrew Sullivan is leaving the Church. Fr. James Martin writes about Sullivan’s op-ed in which he said that he can’t reconcile his homosexuality with the Church’s teaching and thus he’s leaving. Martin responds by saying that lots of people are having problems with the Church, including us “right-wingers” upset at the way the bishops have dealt with the Scandal or the way liturgy is being mangled and so on.
It’s interesting that in all the years that traditionalists (especially the schismatics) have been expressing their dismay at the Church’s direction, we’ve never seen such a paean for us to all get along. But when it’s a prominent gay journalist who dumps his faith, suddenly America is dismayed at the loss. Hmmm.
