Defending the indefensible

In December, a native-Polish priest in Connecticut was arrested for having sex with a 17-year-old girl who had gone to him for counseling after an earlier sexual assault. The police said the priest admitted to having sex with the girl. What was her parish’s reaction? They shunned the girl and set up a legal defense fund for the priest and everyone come out in support of the pervert.

Rather than being able to turn to her parish, the girl had to turn to a national victims’ group for support. I find it sad that this newspaper editorial concludes that “the Church has no lock on Christian kindness.” Scripture tells us they will know we are Christians by our love. Unfortunately, at least in that parish, no one can identify the Christians.
