The Diocese of St. Petersburg is laying off employees because of a dropoff of donations. Why are people giving less? It’s all Bush’s fault of course.
[Vicar general Father Alan] Weber attributed the drop in contributions to a sluggish economy. He said it is difficult to gauge the effect of the sex abuse scandal that has rocked the church nationally.
Of course, it couldn’t be that Bishop Robert Lynch was revealed to have settled a sexual harassment lawsuit from a former male employee for $100,000, could it? Nah, of course not. People just don’t have enough money to give to their church, that must be it. It’s not that bishops turned their eyes away from the perverts in their midst, right?
