It’s not much of a surprise, but Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska has joined Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis in saying he will deny Communion to any manifest, persistent, obstinate sinner, including John Kerry. Specifically, he said he would enforce Canon 915.
Back in 1996, I wrote an article on Bruskewitz’s diocesan law that said membership in a number of dissenting organizations brought an automatic penalty of excommunication, but until now it wasn’t clear if he would include “manifest, persistent, obstinate” sinners, including certain politicians, in the denial of the Eucharist.
