Amen, brother

I know that I was very critical of Iraq’s bishops before the war because they seemed to put placating Saddam Hussein ahead of the cause of truth and justice. I know applaud them for their acceptance of the situation as it is. An Iraqi bishop interviewed by Vatican Radio speaks about the chaos in his country and while he warns of problems and fears for the consequences, he doesn’t criticize America. “The Americans are here to help us, and we thank them. They have already done a great deal.”

His statements seem more directed at his own people to help themselves out of chaos, although he does urge the international community “to make Iraq free and democratic, without any occupation.” Amen to that, my Christian brother.
