Who is he?

The Vaticanisti asks of the new ambassador nominee from the US to the Vatican: Who is he? Francis Rooney is a virtual unknown and the Vaticanisti says even Rooney was surprised by the nomination.

Our sources tell us Rooney was very surprised to have received the Vatican nomination. Rooney expected to be named ambassador to a nation in Central or South America especially since he knows those regions so well from his vast business background (and being fluent in Spanish helps too). But Foggy Bottom wanted him for the Vatican. Our sources also tell us he has only met one cardinal in his entire lifetime: Ted McCarrick from DC.

He’s only met one cardinal? I’m inclined to think that’s a good thing. After meeting McCarrick, maybe he decided he didn’t want to meet anymore.

In any case, we don’t need any bishop-chasing groupies representing us in Rome. You know the type: The walking wallets who show up at star-studded fundraising galas thrown by bishops who are looking to raise money without shoving too much inconvenient dogma down the throats of the self-same wallets. They get to rub elbows and look like good Catholics even if they happen to have their second or third wives hanging off their elbows while spouting nonsense about contraception and women priests.

Anyway, I’m hoping that Rooney isn’t one of them and if he’s a Knight of Malta who’s only ever met one cardinal that’s a good sign.
