What is the mission?

Today in the New York Times we read that the Salvation Army of New York is re-focusing its mission to remind its employees that their core mission is evangelization, not just social services. Good for them. We all need to be reminded that while we have a duty to the natural needs of the poor, our first duty is to their supernatural needs, their eternal afterlife, as Jesus commanded us, especially in Matthew 28:19-20.

Too bad that Catholic Charities doesn’t see it the same way: “Catholic Charities, the UJA-Federation of New York and the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s local synod all said they do not require social service employees to reveal religious affiliations or commit themselves to a religious mission.”
