Who do you think used that objectifying, dignity-stripping, and offensive sentence? Was it the pro-life crowd that all the pundits said were hopping on the Terri bandwagon for their own publicity? Was it the congressional Republicans who were accused of wading into the fight for political purposes? Was it the Evangelicals or bloggers or disability activists or anyone else on Terri’s side?
No, it was the chairman of the Democratic Party, Howard Dean. Speaking to a gay rights group in LA, Dean said he planned to use Terri Schiavo as a blunt instrument against House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and the Republican Party.
This is why the Democrats keep losing. Americans, whatever they think of the euthanizing Terri, are not going to be happy about one of the major political parties using her as a cheap bludgeon in campaign commercials. The Democrats are once again going to come across as tone-deaf unfeeling buffoons exhibiting the type of boorish behavior no one but the most partisan fringe wants to associate with.
