Treasures in the basement

It’s amazing the things you can find when you dig around in old boxes in the basement. Just last night, I found some old Soviet coin proof sets and some interesting Star Trek memorabilia.

The Soviet coins are complete sets of coins from 1974 to 1975 and include everything from 1 kopeek up to 1 ruble. I have found similar sets online from 1990 for $25. They’re not super-valuable, but they’re interesting historical artifacts that I received as gifts from my father in the mid-80s. Maybe if I hang on to them for another decade or two they’ll be worth even more.

The Star Trek stuff is even more unusual. They are two sets of two 45 rpm records in the original packaging from about 1979 when the first movie came out. The packages say they are original stories for children inspired by Star Trek. I probably received them as a gift from somebody about the time the movie came out and never got around to listening to them. I have no idea what they’re worth.

It’s interesting the junk we keep. I wonder how old is the concept of collectibles that have value based purely on their nostalgia quotient.
