Tolkien trivia question and answer #8

Every time I think I’ve made the trivia question too hard, some one of you comes up with the answer. Very impressive.

Melanie says that I’m doing this trivia quiz either as a way to show I’m not the nerdiest fan out there or that I’m king of the nerds. She hasn’t decided which yet. And I’m not telling.

Yesterday’s question was: When Aragorn was adopted by Elrond, what name was he given to hide his true identity, and what did it mean?

The answer is “Estel” which means “hope”. Kit-Kat then challenged others to recall Gilraen’s original quote in Elvish, to which Louis E. responded: “Gilraen said ‘onen i-Estel Edain, u-chebin estel anim’,which is a ‘linnod’ that means ‘I gave Hope to the Dunedain,I have kept no hope for myself.’ Wow, you guys really are amazing.

Now for today’s question: Tolkien based Treebeard’s way of speaking, with its “hrum, hroom,” on what person alive at the time Tolkien wrote it? Answer tomorrow.

The original blog post on this trivia feature is here.
