Yesterday’s trivia question was: “What was the name of the great wolf of Angband who bit off Beren’s hand with the Silmaril?” And the answer is: Carcharoth.
In keeping with a monster of the Silmarillion theme, since it is Halloween, today’s question is: “Who was Ungoliant, and what did she eat and always hunger for?” Answer tomorrow.
Ungoliant was a giant spider, the aid of which Morgoth enlisted against the elves and Valar of the West.
She brought a cloud of darkness with her, and poisoned the land. She ate one of the Silmarils and a bunch of elves too, and she always hungered to eat that which was Light. Her hunger was insatiable. Morgoth enlisted her aid in his devious plots against the elves and the Valar in the West. Did she also help to poison the trees? It was her brood which eventually filled Mirkwood and it was one of her descendants that lived at the entrance of Mordor and ate nasty orcs.
Ah that’s right!
See, there’s the kind of silliness I spout when the rulse say I can’t double check with the book. Hmm At least I got part of it right.
