The Times on Catholic just war theory

A Washington Times editorial examines Catholic just war theory and the debate over whether a war with Iraq would be considered a just war. It’s interesting that the Catholic Church has assumed such a prominent role in the news coverage of the debate over the war. I suppose part of it is because the liberals like the fact that the Vatican and the bishops seem to be on their side on this one, although the point must be made that the US bishops have made it clear that this is a matter of prudential judgment on which people of good will can disagree.

In any case, the Times editorial board agrees with Michael Novak and George Weigel (and me, although I’m not mentioned for some reason (just kidding)) that the proposed military action in Iraq satisfies the conditions set down in Catholic teaching, and most recently in the Catechism, on just war.
