The blogger’s new clothes

The blogger’s new clothes

If you’re the observant type, you’ll notice that this page has been re-designed. Timothy Harrison of Sacred Heart Media has graciously re-designed the page to make it cleaner and faster loading. For those of you using Firefox on Windows, you’ll notice that the page doesn’t jump to one of the ad pages any more.

We’ve also removed a lot of the clutter, paring it down to two columns and taking out a bunch of the stuff that used to be on the left sidebar, including the recent blog entries list and other doodads. Some options have been added to a new menu at the top right.

So what do you think? Since you all will be using this page more than I will, do you think it will do the job?

  • Nice! As the Other Miller says, a lot better under Firefox.

One thing to suggest, and you might just chalk this up to personal preference, but I prefer the old font size.

  • Good job! Keep everything the way you have it now. It looks standarized; heck, you might even set a trend.

  • Congrats.  Agree that the look is cleaner and more legible, especially with respect to the author line for comments.  Also like that the search feature is more prominent and inviting.

  • Hmmm…I liked the font the way it looked on the front page when you first posted this article better than it now looks there.

But all together, a marked improvement over before.  Congratulations to you and Timothy.

  • It works fine for me.  Font size hasn’t changed.  Neither has the comments feature on my computer.  Good way to handle the archives and blogroll.

  • Nice job.

One thing, though. The upper right hand corner blogroll link doesn’t work.

For those of you using Firefox on Windows, youquite attractive, and seems to load faster with Firefox on Linux.  The text appears here in a serif font, as this screenshot illustrates.

  • RC’s screenshot loaded s-l-o-w-l-y on my microsoft computer, the text was small, and after it loaded it jumped to the left and gave me a third-screen version of the webpage that couldn’t be read at all.  Whatever Firefox on Linux did to Dom’s webpage sure messed it up for microsoft!

  • I use Firefox.  I can now adjust the text size using control + .  This is helpful.

It is loading at its regular speed today, so I guess my computer was just sluggish or glitchy the other day.  I am pretty low-tech, and I think the gremlins inside the computer know this and use it to their own advantage.

  • Sorry, Dom, the redesign is terrible with Internet Explorer 6.0.  I get the ads on the left, but there’s no text for 3 browser screens.  I scroll down a blank white page with just ads on the left for 3-4 browser screens until I get to Friday’s posting.  Did you guys check it on IE, or just optimize for Firefox?

  • No, the designer used it with Internet Explorer. In fact, I just checked it with Explorer 6 on Melanie’s PC and it looks just fine. Are you sure it’s not something on your computer?

  • MaryJane,

I’ve checked it too on IE6 and it looks fine.

What screen resolution are you using? Do you have a custom stylesheet?

Is there any way you could take a screenshot (a computer picture of the browser screen) so we can see what you are talking about?

Is anyone else having this problem?

Finally, why are you using IE6? Firefox is MUCH MUCH safer, and a better browser overall:
